In 2008, Maine passed a Statewide Building and Energy Code for new construction, which creates consistency for builders and saves homebuyers and businesses money from day one. Multiple bills were introduced this year that would repeal or gut these common sense standards. However, one sensible bill (LD 1253), which will preserve the most important parts of the building and energy code while making certain adjustments, prevailed with a unanimous committee vote. Unfortunately, for the first time, a second legislative committee took up building codes and is submitting a bill (LD 1416) that would effectively repeal Maine’s uniform code by making it optional for most municipalities. This bill was not supported by the whole committee and business leaders overwhelmingly opposed it at public hearing. A statewide code provides consumer protection and cost savings while ensuring predictability and an easier regulatory environment for builders and developers—it needs to remain a statewide code.

Please email your Senator and Representative, urging them to SUPPORT LD 1253 and OPPOSE LD 1416.
