Member Bio:
JOHN P. GORDON, AIA
Maine Licensed Architect
John has been designing and constructing buildings since 1982. His body of work includes public schools, university buildings, municipal buildings, performing arts facilities and houses. John is dedicated to crafting distinctive buildings along the coast of Maine.
SUSTAINABLE DESIGN • In recent years, John’s residential practice has focused on green, affordable houses. Since 2006, he has been working toward the completion of 51 green workforce houses on Mount Desert Island. In addition, he has designed several single-family residences with an emphasis on sustainability by building smaller houses with a very-tight, well-insulated building envelope; “right-sized” heating system; durable, low-VOC materials; advanced framing techniques; and, simple build- ing forms.
ACCESSIBLE DESIGN • John has extensive experience and knowledge in the design of environments for people with disabilities. His primary experience is providing residential design solutions for people with spinal cord injuries and the elderly. John is intimately familiar with the American with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines. He has performed accessibility assessments and provided accessible design solutions for many schools, municipal buildings, libraries and other public places.
PROFESSIONAL SERVICE • John has been an active member of the American Institute of Architects, Maine Chapter since 1991. In 2003, he joined AIA Maine’s Board of Directors and served as the Chapter’s president for two years (2005-2006). John is a founding member of AIA Maine’s Committee on the Environment and served as its chairperson for three years (2007-2009). Since 2008, he has authored the Green Column for AIA Maine News (published quarterly).
EDUCATION • John was educated at Cornell University. He graduated in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Design and Environmental Analysis.
