Richard Renner | Architects is pleased to announce that the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has awarded the loft at 6 South Street, Portland, Maine, with Platinum Certification in the LEED® for Homes Program. LEED-H, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Homes, is a national rating system that promotes the design and construction of high performance “green” homes. Platinum is the highest certification.
The two bedroom loft is located in a mixed-use urban neighborhood. It is part of a project that converted a derelict commercial building into a flexible, modern, and environmentally responsible live/work combination. The loft’s tightly organized plan accommodates multiple functions without compromising openness and long interior views. High levels of insulation and triple-glazed windows reduce energy use. Light tubes bring daylight into interior spaces. The residence also features radiant floor heating, heat-recovery ventilation, a solar PV system, FSC-certified framing and floors, bamboo cabinets, low flow plumbing fixtures, efficient lighting, low-VOC materials, and a vegetated roof.
