Francis Allen Black Residence Hall is a 5-story brick and metal panel building whose character and construction style anchor the Farmington campus architecture and pedestrian paths.

The building contains suite-style residences for upperclassman students in four-bed and two-bed occupancy combinations, each containing a full bathroom and kitchenette space. Common areas on each floor include two lounges and a study room. Some of the amenities provided are a student laundry, game room, mailboxes, and secured bicycle storage.

Creating a sustainable building with a healthy indoor environment was a priority. In keeping with the University’s environmental mission, this high-performance building is modeled to use 42% less energy than a conventional design. This efficiency was achieved by enhancing the building’s envelope with heat energy-recovery and air-ventilation systems. Lighting systems include fluorescent lamps and occupancy control sensors. The building also features recycled-content materials, low-VOC products, and installation of a water-conservation plumbing system.
