The University of Maine Recreation and Fitness Center was recently certified LEED – Silver by the U.S. Green Building Council. As you approach the building, it is immediately clear that it was designed to reflect the beauty of the Maine outdoors. Its facade incorporates natural stone, and copper that will tarnish as it ages. It is an 87,000 square foot facility that includes a pool, hot tub, sauna, cardio and weight equipment, two multi-purpose rooms, three wood-floored courts, a multi-use court, and two racquetball/squash courts. The Center is located right next to DeMeritt Forest’s 15+ miles of trails. Equipment renters will be able to strap on their skis or snowshoes, and access the trails just a few feet from the back door. Inside, windows stretch from floor to ceiling, letting in the natural light and serving up a great view with each workout.
